St. Petersburg is a large beautiful city in the north-western part of Russia. It is a city of white nights, green parks, numerous channels and bridges. Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia with a population of 4.6 million people. It is situated on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city’s other names were Petrograd and Leningrad. The city was founded by Tsar Peter 1 in 1703. Since that it was the capital of the Russian Empire until 1918. Saint Petersburg is often called “the Venice of the north”. There are a great number of theatres and more than 200 museums in Saint Petersburg. The largest one is the Hermitage Museum, which contains the richest collection of pictures in the world. The Hermitage was designed by Francesco Rastrelli. The most popular theatres are Mariinsky Theatre and The Alexander Theater. The most famous places here are Saint Isaac's Cathedral or Isaakievskiy Sobor, Dvorzovaya Square (Palace Square) and Vasilivski island. Today, a lot of new buildings are being built in the city. Our government is looking forward to renovating a public transport system. People are for removing commercial banners in the city centre. Our citizens want more trees to be planted in the parks and gardens.
